So, let's say there's a person who did a lot for you, and even though you still can't really take it in you feel like you should at the very least try to do something back for them in return. Since it's only natural, and maybe you want to show you care as well or whatever. Something like that.

But all the things they did are so big combined that you can't even start to think of something that would be big enough or of equal value to give in return. So.. what should you even do in a situation like that?

Yeah, you're right. It's just that it's hard to think up concrete questions to ask about someone's life. It just seems so natural to talk to people, and to even get to know them pretty well, with hardly knowing anything about their situation and life back home.

Probably because those things don't really matter here until someone from there comes as well. We are stuck here but we're also save here from whatever dangers and problems were at the world we come from. For some people this place is more dangerous in those terms, for others it's not so I can see why they would want to not remember those bad things waiting for them there while they are here.

It wouldn't be the same. Maybe meeting you, or finding you, is the last piece that's left for the puzzle of his life to be completed. Without at least meeting you, even if he gets married and have children with another woman, he will live to the end of his days feeling that something is missing, most probably. And have a death full of regrets over something he can't explain or understand, simply because what's missing was something as simple as meeting you.
